Encounters in Music City - October

Encounters’ delves into October blues inviting a master of ancient musical heritage, Bassekou Kouyaté and his wife, Ami Sacko to share the stage with one of the best harmonica players of Hungary, Mátyás Pribojszki aka. ‘Jumping Matt’.

Blues is where one of the most ancient musical dynasties of the world and contemporary trends intersect, providing a peek into the past and the future of music at the October concert of ‘Encounters’. World-renowned ngoni player Bassekou Kouyate and Amy Sacko, the ‘Tina Turner of Mali’ come to Veszprém to offer a taste of the beauty of West African music, fundamental to pop as we know it. The ngoni is considered the ancestor of the banjo, pointing to how African heritage travelled the world to inspire new genres all the way to our present, a fact laid bare by the joint performance of Malian masters and a celebrated blues virtuoso, Mátyás Pribojszki. Venturing into new fields prompted by his talent, yet always returning to blues, ‘Jumping Matt’ Pribojszki proves a worthy companion on a journey crossing ages, styles and continents at the next unique event of the ‘Encounters’ series.

The ‘Encounters in Music City’ concert series was launched in 2022, following Veszprém’s admission to the Creative Cities network. As the first Hungarian city to win the ‘City of Music’ title by UNESCO, Veszprém started the series to celebrate the universal language of music.
